James Alexander McFarlane was born in 1979 in North England.

James is experienced. Working over the years to compliment his art, image making and music with professional time served in the record business and the art world as well as live music production and performance experience that really adds depth to the images he makes.

Expressing himself through these works at www.floatingworld.co.uk as painter and print maker James is able to send us a sense of feeling and imagination through light, colour and design, inviting the subconscious.

The concept of the work resonates imagination: the paintings are giant album covers nine times larger than a twelve inch record cover. You want to love the group that’s born within the design, concept and imagination. Inspiration is drawn from historic album covers, colours and sounds of Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Hendrix, ZZ Top and many more areas of contemporary society, Britpop, folk music, advertising, computer graphics, film, conceptual art and painting.

The handmade aluminium crafted surfaces follow the record sleeve pattern, an intriguing texture brandishing materials such as light reflective plastics, graphite, glow in the dark paints, gloss and acrylic materials. Beads and coloured powder are worked into the surface to create a softer effect. The paintings mull playfulness into the aura of the imagination, a prop window for a moment captured in time.

James Alexander McFarlane also makes Prints. Enchanted by British and American film and music posters as he was studying at Art College and working for years in the film business helping shape and select his imagery. He pays homage to the covers of Pink Floyds Relics, and the posters of Moscoso and Crumb through the playful cartoon designs that nod to the masters with images of angels and mechanical detail that shows the skill of a fine draftsman.
